Miriam Yaniv / Ilana Altmann Criminal Update

Miriam Yaniv and Ilana Altmann were spotted at the Surrey Courthouse today, August 3, 2021, to report for a scheduled hearing to set a date for future plea hearings. Their personal appearance was unexpected as Andrew Coulthard had appeared for them in the past and did so virtually.

With assistance from the court house duty counsel, Yaniv and Altmann indicated that they had retained Mo Vayeghan as defense counsel for and requested that this matter be adjourned so they would have time to meet with him.

The matter is adjourned until September 3, 2021 in the same court. Counsel will be given the option to request sign language interpreters to assist Yaniv and Altmann, both of whom have hearing difficulties. They were using sign language to communicate in the courtroom.

Miriam Yaniv is charged with one count of uttering threats while her sister, Ilana, is facing one charge of uttering threats, assaulting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, and willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, related to events that occurred in February, 2021. No pleas have been entered for these charges yet.

Our court observer described Miriam and Ilana as walking nearly arm-in-arm very closely. Ilana had dark sunglasses on, even indoors. Both wore masks, although Miriam took hers off to speak to people up close.

Jessica Yaniv was not spotted with them.
